The Surprising Way to Find Your Happy Weight

A woman looking happy with her arms open wide

Most people think that controlling their food intake is the key to controlling their weight. And let’s be honest - that belief is everywhere.

It’s probably why you’ve been on countless diets, detoxes, and “healthy eating” plans over the years. You want to feel better in your body, so you do what you’ve been told:

  • Cut the calories.

  • Skip the snacks.

  • Eat clean.

  • Don’t eat after 8pm.

  • No carbs.

  • Definitely no sugar.

It feels logical at first. Like, If I just try hard enough, I’ll finally get there.

I thought the same thing.

I remember following rigid rules that left me constantly thinking about food. I'd wake up planning what I could and couldn’t eat, feel proud if I stuck to the plan, and spiral into guilt and shame if I didn't. And inevitably, I’d end up bingeing - usually at night when my willpower had run dry.

What I didn’t realise at the time was this:

The more I tried to control food, the more out of control I felt.

And it wasn’t just me. This is the exact cycle I now see in so many of my clients.

💚 Want help breaking that cycle? Download my free guide to binge-free living - it’s full of practical strategies to help you feel calmer and more balanced around food.

Here’s what often happens when we try to control food…

We start by restricting what we eat. That restriction creates physical and psychological deprivation which leads to cravings (often of the very foods that we swore we must give up). These cravings get so intense they lead to overeating, emotional eating, or full-blown binges. Then we feel guilty and start the restriction all over again.

And over time? Instead of feeling lighter or healthier, we feel stuck. We feel worn out and obsessed with food. Disconnected from our body.

And, ironically, this often leads to weight gain in the long run - the very thing we were trying to avoid.

So what’s the alternative?

It’s not more control. It’s mindfulness.

Control and mindfulness are two very different things.

Control is about rules. It’s external. It tells you what, when, and how much to eat - even if your body is telling you something else. Mindfulness, on the other hand, is about tuning in. It’s internal. It helps you understand your hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues.

It takes time to learn, but it’s worth it. Mindful eating allows you to eat in a way that actually feels good - not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

Here’s what mindful eating has helped me (and my clients) discover:

  • That you can feel full and satisfied without overeating

  • That meals can feel nourishing and enjoyable

  • That food doesn’t have to be a battle or mentally calculating calories

  • That your body is actually really wise, but only if you give it the chance to speak

Of course, this shift doesn’t happen overnight. You may not feel those cues right away, especially if you’ve been overriding them for years. That’s normal. But the more you practice, the clearer things become.
